Your screen went blue. Or black, if you’re on a newer Windows. Either way: don’t panic, and please don’t reinstall Windows. Nine times out of ten this is a driver having a bad day, not a dead PC. Answer three questions and this free blue screen of death fix tells you exactly what’s wrong and what to do.
A blue screen feels like the end of the world. It rarely is. What you’re looking at is Windows hitting the emergency brake on purpose, because something, usually a driver, misbehaved. We’ve seen this thousands of times. The fix is almost always quick, and your photos and files are almost never involved.
One thing worth knowing up front: since the Windows 11 24H2 update, that blue screen is often a black screen now. Same crash, same fixes. They just changed the colour.
This guide doesn’t guess. It reads your crash.
Most “blue screen of death fix” articles hand you forty steps and wish you luck. We don’t work that way. The guide asks you two things that actually matter, can your PC start, and what does the crash screen say, then sends you straight to the fix that fits.
Won’t even boot? We show you how to open Windows’ hidden repair toolkit, the one that opens itself after a few failed starts, and which buttons to press once you’re in.
Boots, then crashes? We look at the line in CAPITAL LETTERS on the crash screen. That’s the whole clue:
Didn’t catch the code? There’s a path for that too.
No jargon left standing.
Every step tells you what you’ll see on screen, so you always know you’re in the right place. And every bit of tech-speak gets translated on the spot. “Safe Mode” becomes “a stripped-back Windows that ignores the troublemaker.” “Device Manager” becomes “the list of every part inside your PC.” If a step might make you nervous, we say so, and tell you it’s perfectly fine to hand that bit to someone else.
Your files are not the problem.
Worth saying plainly, because everyone fears it: roll-backs, repairs, system scans, none of it touches your photos or documents. A blue screen looks catastrophic. It almost never is.
Did everything and it’s still crashing?
Then it’s usually one of three things: a tired hard drive, bad memory, or a deeper Windows fault. That’s hands-on territory, and it’s exactly what we do. Run the free guide first. If it’s still misbehaving, book Remote IT Support and we’ll take it from here. Remote, no callout fee.
