Free up disk space before it starts causing problems.

When your drive fills up, the computer stops telling you directly. Updates fail with no explanation. Apps crawl. Export jobs stall halfway through. This free checklist helps you free up disk space fast using only the built-in tools already on your machine. No downloads, nothing installed, nothing deleted without your input.

It shows you where the space actually went first
Most cleanup guides skip straight to deleting things. We start by opening your OS storage analyser, Windows Storage Settings or macOS Storage Settings, to show you the real breakdown before you touch anything. You see exactly which category is eating your drive, then work through the ones that matter most.

Quick Wins clear most of it fast
Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash. Sort Downloads by size and delete old installers. Restart your computer to flush caches. Those three steps recover 5 to 15GB on most machines and take under five minutes. Most people are surprised it was sitting there the whole time.

Built-in tools go deeper without installing anything
Windows has two separate tools that catch different things: Cleanup Recommendations for everyday junk, and Disk Cleanup for system files left behind by updates. Both are covered. On Mac, the checklist walks you through clearing app caches the right way and removing local Time Machine snapshots that silently eat tens of gigabytes on macOS Tahoe when your backup drive is not connected. Every step tells you which menu to open and what you will see on screen.

Smart Habits stop it filling back up
The last section covers Storage Sense on Windows, OneDrive Files On-Demand, iCloud Optimize Storage on Mac, clearing old iPhone and iPad backups stored locally, and setting a five-minute monthly check. One of these alone often frees another 5 to 10GB and keeps the drive clear.

Nothing gets deleted without your say
Windows needs at least 15 to 20 percent free to run properly. macOS Tahoe needs at least 35 to 40GB free for updates to install. Every step shows you what is there and asks you to make the call before anything moves. If you need to free up disk space quickly, start with the Quick Wins section and work down from there.

Still tight after working through it?
If the drive is still full after the checklist, you are usually dealing with deep system junk, hidden duplicates, or a partition issue. Our System Optimization service handles it remotely in one session with no callout fee. Run the checklist first, or browse the rest of our free tech checks while you are here.
