How It Works

Terminal is where the Mac stops pretending to be simple. These four commands are the survival tier, not everything Terminal can do, just the ones that come up so often they stop feeling like commands and start feeling like reflexes.

In Practice

ls -la lists everything in the current folder including the hidden files macOS normally keeps out of sight, the dotfiles, the config files, the things Finder pretends don’t exist. It’s usually the first command anyone types in a new directory, and the -la flags become automatic within a week.

cd ~ jumps straight back to the home folder from wherever a session has wandered off to, the reset button for when you’ve navigated six directories deep and lost track of where you are. And sudo !!, pronounced “sudo bang bang,” reruns the previous command with admin rights, a trick even Red Hat’s own engineers call essential, built for the moment a command fails with “permission denied” and retyping the whole thing feels like punishment.

killall Dock force-restarts the Dock when it freezes, stops responding, or does that thing where icons vanish for no reason. It sounds destructive, it’s completely safe, the Dock relaunches itself in about a second, and it fixes more Dock weirdness than any settings menu ever has.
