Most routers are set up wrong from the start

Phase 1 — Physical setup and first login
The router setup process starts with where you put the router. Most people put it in a cupboard or behind the TV and then wonder why signal is weak in half the house. This guide tells you exactly where to place it and why. It then walks you through connecting the modem, powering on in the correct order, logging into the admin page, entering your ISP settings, and running the first-time setup wizard.

Phase 2 — Security hardening
This is the phase most router setup guides skip entirely. Once you are logged in, your first job is to change the admin password — the default is public knowledge. Then set WiFi encryption to WPA3-Personal, set a strong WiFi passphrase of at least 16 characters, disable WPS, turn off remote management, and update the firmware.
